This is what the US was always happy to have. Nobody really wanted to be over-run by what ever was really going on in that part of the world. Both sides were "bad" so what would be the point of taking sides. The US as long as they could get away with it, I am quite sure would have been quite happy selling weapons to both sides.

Now the thing I recall happened with the whole Saddam Hussein issue was some sort of well advertised march on Kuwait.
